Your Church Doesn't Need More Volunteers. Your People Need to Feel Needed.

Getting connected people onto a team is one of the five problems every church keeps solving. The answer isn't more sign-up sheets. It's helping people see how God wired them and where they'll thrive.

Almost every church I work with is wrestling with one of five problems: getting new people to come, getting new people to connect, getting connected people to join a team, raising up leaders, and raising money. Churches face those same five over and over, and just keep discovering new ways to solve them. This episode is about the third one. Your people are showing up and even taking a next step. So how do you get them serving on a team where they feel fulfilled and know they're making a difference?

Nobody parks cars at Walmart

I once heard someone say that churches don't really need all those volunteers. What they need is to create opportunities for people to feel needed.

Think about it. When you pull into Walmart or the mall, how many people are out there parking cars? None. Everyone knows how to park a car, and they don't forget how when they get to church. We put parking volunteers out there so guests feel welcome from the moment they arrive. But we also do it because when someone joins a team, they get buy-in. They feel part of the mission and the vision. They stay connected, and they bring more people with them.

Everybody shows up for the kid playing the tree

It's like the school play. Your kid might be cast as the tree in the back corner, and you don't care. You're buying tickets. You're inviting your parents, your neighbors, and your coworkers. Hopefully your kid lands a better part than a tree, but either way, you feel like you're part of that play.

That's what a team does for the people in your church. A small part still makes it their church. And people invite their friends to the things they're part of.

Gifts tell you what. Personality tells you how.

Most churches already run some kind of assessment in their growth track. The problem is that most of the tests out there only measure spiritual gifts. If I find out I'm a teacher, I'll get pointed to a teaching role. But teaching a small group and teaching at a conference are completely different jobs.

Spiritual gifts show what God has gifted you to do. Personality shows how He equipped you to do it. When you look at both together, using the whole score and not just two letters, you can put someone on a team where they'll actually thrive, not just a team that needs a body.

That's why I built YourTeam.church. It matches people to your church's teams based on their spiritual gifts and their personality, and it tells them what life will actually be like for someone wired like them on that team. People walk out of your growth track knowing their best next step, and knowing God designed them on purpose.

Don't let the results disappear

Here's what always bothered me about paper assessments. Someone takes it, adds up a score that's only as good as their math, flips through a booklet to find a team, and then the whole thing disappears. Nobody ever looks at it again.

The results should live somewhere. When the assessment is connected to a dashboard, you can search your people by team, by personality, or by name. When kids ministry needs help, you know who to call. Before you meet with someone to coach, connect, or counsel, you can know how God has wired them and which team to suggest as a follow-up.

I took one of these in a new believers class around eighth grade. Seeing that God made me on purpose got me involved at a young age, and I stayed involved through youth group, college, and onto a church staff. That's what I want for the people in your church: to feel seen, known, and needed, and to find the people they get to serve alongside.
